Greek farmers take over Athens

Thousands of farmers from all over Greece marched with tractors and clashed with the police in central Athens to protest against the government’s plans to impose tax rises and pension system reforms. About 800 farmers from the island of Crete arrived early in the morning on Friday, February 12, 2016 at the Agriculture Ministry where they thrown vegetables towards the police and rocks at the windows of the building. Later, they joined farmers from other cities and blocked the main road in front of the Greek Parliament. Some of them, stayed all night at the Syntagma Square where they built tents.

Clashes broke out during anti-government protest in Athens

More than 40,000 people joined anti-government protest in Athens on Thursday, January 4, as Greece was crippled by a general strike. The demonstrations in central Athens were mostly peaceful though at some point clashes broke out between anarchist protesters and riot police at Syntagma Square and outside the Parliament. Police used tear gas and stun grenades to push back the hooded anarchists who were throwing petrol bombs towards them.

Hundreds of people gathered in front of the Greek Parliament in Athens to protest against the new austerity measures on November 12, 2015. Riot police fired tear gas after a small group of young extremists launched Molotov cocktails at them. This is the first general strike since Alexis Tsipras became PM.

Mexicans living in Greece celebrated the Day of the Dead in downtown Athens, at the neighborhood of Psyrri. Día de los Muertos, as it is known in Spanish, is a holiday when according to tradition people gather to pray and remember friends and family members who have passed away. In 2008 the tradition was inscribed in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO and it is celebrated at the last day of October, and the first two days of November.

Hundreds of refugees and migrants camp at Victoria Square in Athens

Refugees and migrants, -from countries like Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran among others- coming from the Greek islands everyday find a temporary shelter at Victoria Square in downtown Athens. After disembarking at the port of Piraeus they arrive via subway at the square, where they stay until they find money and papers to continue their journey to central and northern Europe.

Sunday morning at the bazaar of Schisto

Every Sunday on the foot of mount Schisto, near Piraeus, people from all over Attica gather in the largest bazaar to be held in the region. Men and women, mostly of the lower classes, attend the open bazaar to buy everyday common things, such as clothes, shoes, and even used cars, and sometimes pets (canaries, chicken, pigeons etc).
